Professional Engineering Registration

Introduction

The Institute of Traffic Accident Investigators (ITAI) is proud to have developed a route to professional engineering registration for its membership. This has been achieved through ITAI becoming a Professional Affiliate of the Engineering Council and by a co‑operative agreement with the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE).

The ethos of ITAI is to promote excellence in the multi-disciplinary science of accident (collision) investigation and reconstruction of which engineering is a considerable constituent. We are, thus, all engineers to some extent.

The ITAI membership is encouraged towards registration with the Engineering Council to prove their professional commitment and technical competence, setting themselves apart as engineers with high standards. The grades available are:

Engineering Technician (EngTech);
Information and Communications Technology Technician (ICTTech);
Incorporated Engineer (IEng); and
Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Such registrations represent professional standings that are recognised both nationally and internationally. Successful applicants are entitled to use the post-nominals indicated above.

EngTech, ICTTech and IEng registrations are available to Associate Members of ITAI (AMITAI) whereas all four grades are available to ‘full’ Members of ITAI (MITAI). Applications for AMITAI and MITAI may be made at the same time as applications for professional registration. It is not necessary for a member of ITAI to join IHE to become professionally registered with the Engineering Council.

Engineering Technician

Engineering Technicians apply proven techniques and procedures to the solution of practical engineering problems. They are competent technically and are often skilled practitioners working under the guidance of others but can sometimes be managing small teams.

Information and Communications Technology Technician

Information and Communications Technology Technicians work in a variety of environments. These include, but are not limited to, offices, development laboratories, data and operational centres, field environments, customer premises and manufacturing.

They support a range of highway engineering functions which utilise ICT solutions, and hardware and software components. Examples of functions include, but are not limited to, design, development, implementation, installation, operation, problem solving and security of ICT applications, products, services and/or infrastructures.

ICTTech is the most appropriate grade of professional registration for highway engineering technicians working in traffic signals, ITS, CAD design and data modelling.

Incorporated Engineer

Incorporated Engineers maintain and manage applications of current and developing technology, and may undertake engineering design, development, manufacture, construction, reconstruction and operation. This includes ‘reverse engineering’ the aftermath of road traffic accidents (collisions). They know ‘why’ as well as ‘how’. They hold responsible positions that require them to exercise independent judgement, sometimes leading and managing teams.

Chartered Engineer

Chartered Engineers lead, develop and implement solutions to engineering problems using new or existing techniques and technologies. They will achieve this through innovation and creativity. They will have technical accountability for complex investigations and reconstructions with significant levels of responsibility.

Registration Transfer

Any members who are professionally registered (EngTech, ICTTech, IEng, CEng) with another Engineering Council licenced institute can transfer their registration to the IHE/ITAI free of charge.

Preparation Courses

IHE run preparation workshops for prospective registrants. These are advertised by IHE periodically. Prospective applicants from the ITAI membership are welcome to attend such workshops upon payment of the standard fee as would be applicable to IHE members.

Application

Candidates will complete an application form that will be submitted to the ITAI Grades Assessment Secretary. These are available by downloading the relevant document from the list below.

ITAI will examine the submitted portfolio for ITAI membership grade compliance and against the IHE checklist.

ITAI will send the portfolio to IHE headquarters in London.

IHE will check the portfolio against its own checklist.

IHE will convene an interview panel to appraise the candidate.

You will, therefore, need to be logged in as a member before you can view or download them.

Interview Panel

The interview panel will comprise two engineers of equal or superior grade to that for which the candidate has applied. One will be a road safety specialist (e.g. from ITAI) and the other will be from a more general engineering background.

Any ITAI member to be included on the interview panel must be an Engineering Council registrant at the appropriate level and have undergone appropriate IHE training sessions.

A representative of Engineering Council might also be present during the interview.

The interview panel must be satisfied of the identity of the applicant.

IHE policy is to conduct interviews in person and not by telephone or video link. ITAI overseas applicants will, therefore, be required to travel to the UK to undergo appraisal.

All interviews must be conducted in English. Whilst interpreters are permissible, at the applicant’s own expense, the interview panel must be satisfied that the applicant has sufficient grasp of English.

Finance

Members seeking professional registration shall be responsible for the fees relating to Engineering Council annual registration, IHE administration and ITAI administration. As an example, the fees are likely to be:

Engineering Council Annual Registration (max) £52

IHE Administration £250

ITAI Administration £65

Total: £367

NB: The figures quoted above pertain to rates current in 2020 and might change over time. The Engineering Council registration is quoted at the current CEng rate. Lesser grades will be charged at lesser amounts. The fees will be payable to ITAI.
